A 68-year-old woman had to be rescued by helicopter on Tuesday after she fell and became trapped on one of the towers of Britain's historic Wells Cathedral, AFP reports.

A Royal Air Force chopper winched the woman 45 metres (150 feet) to safety after she became trapped in a gap between two walls in the bell tower.

She was freed after three hours and taken to hospital suffering from hip, arm, and leg injuries.

It was not immediately clear what caused her to fall.

A spokesman for the cathedral, which is in south west England, said the woman was part of a 12-person tour group.

"While the group was undertaking a briefing within this space an incident occurred to one of the party members," he said, adding that the cathedral's emergency procedure "was immediately put into operation".

Tours of the tower have been postponed until further notice, the cathedral said.
