According to Euronews, there are over 100 forest fires burning on mainland Portugal. The government has declared a state of emergency in all affected municipalities. At least seven people have died due to the fires, and no fewer than 40 people have been injured.
On Wednesday, September 18, 230 Spanish firefighters arrived in Portugal. They are part of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME).
Morocco has sent two Canadair planes to Portugal. The European Commission has mobilized eight firefighting planes in response to Portugal’s request to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
In the Portuguese town of Tabua, a three-day mourning period has been declared following the deaths of firefighters: 3 people died on Tuesday, September 17.
According to The Portugal News, three people have been arrested - a man and two women - who are suspected of arson.
