Kazakhstan citizens were not among those killed in the Malaysia Airlines plane crash over a rebel stronghold in eastern Ukraine, Tengrinews reports citing the press-secretary of the Foreign Ministry of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Aytmakhanov.
“According to preliminary information, there were no Kazakhstanis on board,” he said in a phone call.
It was reported earlier that the Foreign Ministry was investigating whether any Kazakhstanis were on board of the ill-fated Boeing-777 that headed from Amsterdam to Kuala-Lumpur.
The plane crashed in the self-proclaimed Donetsk National Republic on 17 July in the second half of the day. There were 283 passengers and 15 crew members on board. There are no survivors. Ukrainian air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane at 18.45 Moscow time just 50 kilometers from the border with Russia.
Kazakhstan's airline Air Astana temporarily canceled its flights to Kiev. It also changed the route of its Atyrau-Amsterdam-Atyrau flight to bypass Ukraine. Russia's Aeroflot tweeted that it would reroute all of its flights to avoid Ukrainian airspace as well. Other companies, that will avoid Ukraine are Russian Transaero, Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa.
This is the second tragedy involving Malaysia Airlines flight this year. In March, another Boeing of the company, on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijin, suddenly disappeared from the radars. The mystery as to what happened to the plane has not been solved to this day.
