New MEGA mall construction site on fire in Almaty

A fire happened in the area of Makatayev and Massanchi streets in Almaty, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Almaty Emergency Situations Department. The fire started at the territory of the new MEGA mall construction site. The fire-fighting operation involved 30 fire-fighters, 5 regular fire-fighting vehicles and 2 special vehicles. Police stopped the traffic on Makatayev street. “The most likely cause is violation of safety rules by the contractor, Ata-Stroi company, that is responsible for construction of the mall. It was foam plastic that caught fire in the storage facilities of the complex,” public relations director of MEGA malls Alisher Yelikbayev said. Firefighters said that mineral wool caught fire. And STV correspondent reported from the site that there was a threat that the assembled metal frame would cave in during the fire. According to Almaty fire-fighting service, the fire area made 500 square meters. The fire was quenched rather fast. No casualties were reported.
