Tengrinews.kz - The first case of Mpox virus (known as monkeypox) outside of Africa has been recorded in Sweden, according to Euronews.
The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs reported that the infected individual contracted the disease during a trip to Africa and sought treatment in Stockholm.
The Ministry emphasized that this case "does not impact the overall risk to the public," as noted in their statement.
It is noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned about the likelihood of new cases of the virus being imported into Europe in "the coming days."
WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the Mpox epidemic an international health emergency. Previously, the African Union also declared a health emergency due to this virus.
According to the African CDC, as of August 8, 2,822 people have been infected across 13 African countries, with 14,719 suspected cases reported. The virus has claimed the lives of 517 people, 511 of whom were in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Mpox virus is transmitted from rodents or infected individuals. Symptoms appear after 5-21 days and include high fever, pain, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, chills, and skin blisters similar to chickenpox.
The disease, which has no specific treatment, is managed with antiviral medications.
