Fire has broken out in Passage shopping mall located at the crossing of Kunayev and Zhibek Zholy streets on August 10 at 19.10 p.m., Tengrinews reports.
No casualties were reported, but the mall's left-side facade and a Turkish cafe located near the mall were damaged the most.
According to preliminary information, a short circuit triggered the fire first in the Turkish cafe. And given the fact that the entire building is clad with low quality combustible facade material called Alucobond - the one, which fueled the fire in several buildings in Astana a few years ago - the blaze engulfed the second floor of the mall and even the neighboring houses when the fire brigade arrived at the scene.
The fire covering an area of 80 square meters was taken under control at 19.29 p.m., and 13 minutes later it was completely extinguished.
A tram line near the shopping center ended up being blocked because of the incident, therefore the traffic was temporarily suspended.
The city's Emergency Department is investigating into the causes of the incident.
In fact, news about another shopping mall catching fire may soon become a routine for the city's residents. Just this April, Almaty's largest shopping mall Adem burned down in a massive fire. Many owners of the boutiques watched their goods go up in flames. Moreover, some of them lost very important documents, such as lease agreements, in the fire.
Before that, Almaty's flee market endured three massive fires in 2013.
