Over 50 villages of the Aral Sea area may be flooded, KazTAG reports citing the press-service of Kyzylorda oblast Emergency Situations Department.

“There are currently 51 villages in the area next to the (Syradrya) River; they are considered the most vulnerable,” head of the oblast department for mobilization, civil defense and prevention of emergency situations Marat Baimbetov said.

“People have been warned about the danger and instructed to take the necessary measures. Anti-flood works are in process in the coastal area,” he said.

Baimbetov said that the recent sharp warming and heavy rains have inflated the water level of the Syrdarya River by 15 centimeters. The ice is still melting.

“400 cubic meters of water per second is flowing into the lower reaches of the river from Shardarinskoye Water Reservoir. In case the water level keeps increasing, we will use Koksaray compensating reservoir, local channels and water reservoirs,” he said adding that the problematic river areas are monitored around-the-clock.

“The flood risk has been significantly decreased after Koksaray compensating reservoir was introduced,” head of Aral-Syradrya inspection on use of water resources Adilkhan Karlykhanov said.

For the time being Koksaray compensating reservoir is cut off from the main flow. It currently stores 1.5 billion cubic meters of water and can accepting 1.5 billion cubic meters more in case of an emergency.
