Two students from the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Semey city in eastern Kazakhstan Oblast have been acknowledged the world's best in Mathematics based on their SAT test results, Tengrinews reports citing the East Kazakhstan Oblast press center. More than 1000 students from 175 countries took the test. The Nazarbayev Intellectual School was represented by 7 students. Ainur Mashpiyeva became the best by solving all 50 problems correctly in the mathematics section of the test and scoring the maximum800 points. Her classmate Akgul Kenzhenova scored 710 points in mathematics. That is an excellent result as well, because only 10% of those who took the test got good scores. This achievement opens new horizons for Ainur. She has received an eduction scholarship and can choose any University in the world. "I am going to be an engineer; technical experts are in a great demand in Kazakhstan. I prefer to study in the Astana-based Nazarbayev University for now. It is one of the world’s best universities. And I would like to get my education in my home country and I hope to make a contribution to its development," Ainur says. Akgul also named the Nazarbayev University as the university of her choice. Because best foreign professors are teaching there and its education quality meets the international standards, she says. Michael Malutshi, a mathematics teacher at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School, prepared the girls for the math test, because the test assignments were in English. "We received the test questions by mail from the USA and open them only on the day of the exam. In other words, the test is held in 175 countries within one day and one hour," he said. The SAT is a standardized test for most college admissions in the United States. The SAT is owned, published, and developed by the College Board, a nonprofit organization in the United States. It was formerly developed, published, and scored by the Educational Testing Service, which still administers the exam. The test is intended to assess a student's readiness for college. It was first introduced in 1926, and its name and scoring have changed several times. It was first called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, then the Scholastic Assessment Test. The current SAT Reasoning Test, introduced in 2005, takes 3 hours and 45 minutes to finish, and costs US$51 (US$91 International), excluding late fees. Possible scores range from 600 to 2400, combining test results from three 800-point sections (Mathematics, Critical Reading, and Writing). A SAT Test Center has been established on the basis of Semey's Nazarbayev Intellectual School last year. Before that SAT centers were only in Astana and Almaty. Students from Pavlodar and Ust-Kamenogirsk cities can now take the test in Semey as well.
