Kazakhstan's Ministry of Education and Science has named most popular university majors in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports.

"There is a fairly high level of competition in Education degrees. (...) More and more young graduates are choosing Engineering majors. For example, the competition for Biotechnology major is 6 people per 1 scholarship, Geodesy and Cartography - 4 high school graduates per 1 scholarship. Majors like Radio Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications, Information Systems, Automation and Control, Transport Engineering, Electrical Engineering are becoming more popular among Kazakhstan's school graduates nowadays," head of the Department for Higher, Postgraduate Education and International Cooperation Zhasulan Shaimardanov said at the Tuesday meeting of the state committee awarding education scholarships.

The demand for Agricultural Science degrees including Horticulture, Agronomy, Soil Science, Agricultural Chemistry, Forestry, Farming and Fishery is also high, he said.

In addition, many school graduates choose Medicine majors - the competition ranges from 2 to 9 people per 1 scholarship.

Degrees in humanities, particularly Economics and Law, are very popular among the youth, too.

However, very few Kazakhstan's graduates choose to major in Museology, Protection of Monuments, Foreign Philology, French Language Studies, Cultural Studies, Processing Technology of Wood Products, Physics, Astronomy, Geology, Mineral Exploration, Library Science and Veterinary Medicine. "(...) The competition is less than one person per 1 scholarship," Zhasulan Shaimardanov said.

State committee for awarding educational scholarships began its work on Tuesday. Kazakhstan government is providing 34,165 education grants this year, most of which are allocated for engineering majors.

The committee will announce the final results on August 10. Names of the lucky scholarship holders will be published in the national media.
