Starting from 2014 Kazakhstan students will able to study in French Sorbonne university without leaving Almaty, Tengrinews reports citing Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University (KazNPU). On September 17 KazNPU and Paris Sorbonne University signed a memorandum establishing the University Sorbonne-Kazakhstan and making the prestigious European education available for Kazakhstan citizens in their home country. The memorandum was signed by President of Paris Sorbonne University Jean-Francois Girard and President of KazNPU Serik Praliyev. A French delegation led by French Minister of Francophonie Affairs Yamina Benguigui, French writer Marek Halter, Akim (Mayor) of Almaty city Akhmetzhan Yessimov, representatives of the French Embassy in Kazakhstan and officials from the Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education and Science attended the signing ceremony. "Development of international cooperation worldwide is very important for our university that is a member of the Bologna Declaration. It is one of our priorities," President of KazNPU Praliyev said, adding that researchers of the Kazakhstan university would be implementing scientific projects together with their colleagues from Sorbonne. "We are pleased to cooperate with our French colleagues for the good of both of our countries," he said. The Bologna Declaration is a joint declaration of the European Ministers of Education convened in Bologna on 19 June 1999. The Bologna Declaration initiated the Bologna Process. This process is designed to introduce a system of academic degrees that are easily recognizable and comparable, promote the mobility of students, teachers and researchers, ensure high quality teaching and incorporate the European dimension into higher education. Kazakhstan joined the Bologna Process in March 2010.
