Torgyn Shaikhina, a student from Kazakhstan, has won the IT and Computer Science Undergraduate of the Year Award at the University of Warwick, the UK, Tengrinews reports citing 24.kz TV channel.

Torgyn Shaikhina, 21, is a holder of Bolashak Education Scholarship that enabled her to study in Warwick. She is the first student from a post-Soviet country to win this prestigious award.

“The award, sponsored by BT, was launched to find Britain’s most promising IT students, and involved a rigorous competition, including a series of online tests, written forms, interviews, assessment exercises and a presentation,” said the Warwick University press release.

“I have never felt that the education that I received in a province at the outskirts of Kazakhstan, was in any way inferior to those offered by best schools of the world,” said Torgyn Shaikhina. The Award winning student shared that she was incredibly proud of the dynamic development of her country and considered the Scholarship to be a major instrument in developing the intellectual potential of Kazakhstan. “For me Bolashak holds a special place because it is foresighted and well-considered,” added Ms. Shaikhina.

Dr. David Dyer of the School of Engineering at the Warwick University praised the Bolashak Scholarship recipients. “All the Bolashak students are extremely motivated. I noticed they are constantly progressing. Torgyn Shaikhina is an exceptional student,” said Dr. Dyer. A computer and information engineering student, Ms.Shaikhina, is highly praised by the faculty and believes that “in the world of complex technologies, there are no easy tasks.”

Because of Ms. Shaikhina’s eagerness to challenge herself and to progress academically she received a summer placement at BT Innovate and Design.

In her speech, Ms. Shaikhina expressed gratitude to the Warwick University and said: “I am thrilled to win this award. With so many brilliant candidates, being named the winner is a great honor for me. I am looking forward to my placement with BT and am really hopeful that my future career will benefit from it.”
