Akim (Mayor) of Almaty Akhmetzhan Yessimov criticized the speed of elimination of storm consequences and particularly cleaning up of fallen trees at the territory of Ile-Alatau national park, Tengrinews.kz reported from offsite meeting. “You have delayed solution of this issue for too long. All required funds, 617 million tenge ($4.2 million) have been allocated from the local budget, not a single tenge has been spent by the government. Three month have passed since the storm. There are still no regulatory documents. There are many woodworking companies. They are ready to bring their people to the sites and clean up themselves. But they are unclear on how to do this job. Nobody wants to deal with prosecutor’s office or financial police afterward,” Akim said. “There were no regulatory documents allowing administration of Ile-Alatau park to do this job. That’s why so few people have been involved in the works. Nobody wants to work without legal basis,” head of Almaty Department of Natural Resources and Natural Use Regulation Aktai Rakhimbetov said. Currently the majority of 10,876 fallen trees have already been cleaned up. There are only 150 trees and 300 stubs left. The trees were fallen after storms on May 17 May 17 and June 27. Full restoration of the forests will take up to 150 years, as fir trees grow slowly. 480 hectares of forest was damaged by the storm, which makes the total of 97 thousand cubic meters of timber.
