Tengrinews.kz — In August, residents of Kazakhstan will be able to see one of the most beautiful meteor showers of the year — the Perseids. In 2026, viewing conditions are expected to be especially favorable: the peak of the meteor shower will coincide with the new moon, meaning bright moonlight will not interfere with watching the “shooting stars.”

When to watch the meteor shower in 2026

The Perseids are one of the best-known and most spectacular meteor showers, reaching peak activity every year in mid-August. In 2026, according to Space, the shower will be active from July 14 to August 24, with the greatest number of meteors visible on the night of August 12–13.

In clear weather during this period, up to 100 meteors per hour may light up the sky.

An additional advantage will be the new moon, which will keep natural light pollution to a minimum and make observation conditions almost ideal.

According to scientists’ calculations, it is best to start observations after 11:00 p.m. local time, when the sky becomes dark enough.

How best to watch the meteor shower

No special equipment is needed to see the Perseids. Neither a telescope nor binoculars are required, since meteors are best observed with the naked eye.

Foreign astronomers recommend following several simple rules:

  • choose an open area with a good view of the sky;
  • move away from city lights;
  • give your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness;
  • do not look at one fixed point, but try to take in as much of the sky as possible.

Specialists from the V. G. Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute gave similar recommendations.

According to them, the best conditions for observing the night sky are found far from populated areas, where there is no strong light pollution and the sky remains clear. Residents of major cities are therefore advised to travel outside city limits and check the weather forecast in advance.

Why the Perseids appear

According to NASA, the Perseids occur every year when Earth passes through the trail of dust left behind by Comet 109P/Swift–Tuttle.

When tiny particles of cosmic dust enter our planet’s atmosphere, they burn up, leaving bright glowing trails. These are commonly known as “shooting stars.”

The Perseids are known for their fast and bright meteors with long luminous trails. Sometimes, especially bright flashes — fireballs — can also be seen among them, standing out clearly against the other meteors.

Astronomy enthusiasts can expect other celestial events this year as well. By the end of July, residents of Kazakhstan will be able to observe several interesting phenomena, including July’s full moon, known as the Buck Moon, the peak activity of two meteor showers at once, and the appearance of Comet 10P/Tempel 2.

However, the Perseids are traditionally considered one of the most anticipated meteor showers of the year. Thanks to the shower’s high activity and favorable conditions in 2026, residents of Kazakhstan will have the opportunity to see dozens — and, under the right circumstances, up to 100 — bright meteors in one hour.
