Tengrinews.kz - Christmas has been labeled the most toxic holiday of the year due to the release of harmful volatile chemicals from cooking, festive candles, and party poppers, according to the Daily Mail.

Cooking is a significant contributor, with gas ovens that run for hours emitting nitrogen dioxide, a substance dangerous to human health. Even electric stoves release ultrafine particles less than 100 nanometers in size, which can penetrate deeply into the respiratory system.

Festive candles with seasonal scents like cinnamon and mistletoe also release volatile chemicals, while seemingly harmless party poppers eject tiny particles into the air.

"Christmas Day may well be the most toxic day of the year. It has the same effect as standing by the side of a busy London road for four hours, which is not something most people would choose to do," said Ian Colbeck, an air pollution expert from the University of Essex.

Research indicates that our well-insulated, enclosed homes could pose health risks during holiday preparations.

To mitigate these effects, scientists recommend using houseplants to absorb some of the harmful emissions circulating indoors. Planting birch trees in outdoor spaces can also help, as they are known to cut pollution levels in half.

Air pollution isn’t the only risk associated with Christmas celebrations. For insurance companies, the holiday is a nightmare, with significant payouts made annually for fires and injuries during the festivities.
