FBI agent Sara Wood has testified against Azamat Tazhayakov, a student from Kazakhstan, at a federal court hearing in Boston, Tengrinews reports citing The Boston Globe.

Tazhayakov, a Kazakhstani student of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, along with his friend Dias Kadyrbayev are accused of obstructing justice in the Boston bombings case. Wood was one of the agents who interviewed the Kazakhstani students after the bombings. She disagreed with the version given by Tazhayakov’s lawyer.

Recounting the interrogation, Wood testified that Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev decided to get rid of Dzhokhar Tsarnayev’s backpack together. They allegedly got rid of the backpack when they learned that Tsarnayev’s older brother died in a shooting with local police. According to Wood, the Kazakh students went to Tsarnayev’s room where they found his backpack with remains of fireworks and tossed it into a garbage bin. Woon maintained that Kadyrbayev suggested Tazhayakov to through away the backpack with fireworks and Tazhayakov agreed.

Meanwhile, the defense of the Kazakhstani student denies such testimony. Tazhayakov’s lawyer Nicholas Woolridge said that his client had never taken the backpack from Tsarnayev’s room. It was Kadrybayev who took the backpack from the room and Tazhayakov learned about it from the FBI agents during the interrogation. In addition, Tazhayakov was interrogated without a lawyer and voluntarily gave his mobile phone for inspection. Woolridge noted that it reflected Tazhayakov’s wish to help the investigation.

Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev were arrested on April 20. They might face up to 25 years of imprisonment for obstructing justice. Kadyrbayev will face the court on September 8.
