The two Kazakhstani diplomats, Consul General of Kazakhstan in Frankfurt am Main Akhat Alpysbayev, 53, and Consul Kairat Adyrov, 36, were arrested in Germany in 2013 for organized importation of untaxed cigarettes.
In April 2014 the two diplomats were sentenced to two years and eight months in prison by a German court. In July, Kazakhstan's Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrissov said that the Foreign Ministry will seek their extradition to Kazakhstan.
"A request for transfer of the aforecited citizens to Kazakhstan to continue serving their sentences in their home country has been sent by the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan through diplomatic channels to the Ministry of Justice of Germany," the Prosecutor General’s Office told Interfax-Kazakhstan.
"An answer from the German side has not been received yet,” they added.
