Kazakhmys Corporation will improve working conditions at its mines, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports. “The agreement achieved in the negotiations is related to all mines of the corporation and not only Annensky mine. All employees have to have equal conditions, that’s why it is logical and rational to improve the working conditions for everyone at the same time,” press-service of Kazakhmys Corporation (major industrial asset of Kazakhmys Plc) told Interfax-Kazakhstan. Kazakhmys will also meet the main requirements of the corporation’s mine workers that their put forth in their collective letter made of 11 points. “Only the key requirements have been satisfied. We are talking about wages and account of time they spend in a bus on the way to the mine. These are not minutes, but hours (of new paid work time) we are talking about,” the press-service stated. Meanwhile, the press-service of Karaganda oblast administration stated that last Sunday, May 6, oblast Akim (Governor) Abelgazi Kussainov met with Chairman of Kazakhmys Corporation Eduard Ogai. Ogai said that the rally was caused by “systematic wages cuts”. “If a worker does not meet the set production targets he earns less money. But the employees are unhappy because losses of work time occur. When they are cut from both ends, the discontent starts rising. Everything started with that,” Ogai said. He also stated that “250 workers gathered in the repair shop of Annensky mine and they were supported by 2,000 people on the surface”. On Saturday 98 mine workers of the night shift refused to returned back to the surface, while 100 workers of the morning shift failed to go down into the mine. Later the number of strikers went even higher up. Annensky mine workers were supported by the workers of two other mines: East-Zhezkazgan and Yuzhnyi (“South”). Last Sunday representatives of the workers and Kazakhmys management met next to the administrative building at Annensky mine. Kazakhmys representatives guaranteed that no sanctions will be taken against the workers if they show a constructive approach to resolving the labor dispute. Later the workers striking at the surface presented collective requirements, where a wages raise was the main requirement. The corporation representatives told them that “after the letter is signed by the workers, the company management will start reviewing it in details”. In March employees of Kazakhmys Corporation were planning a rally in Zhezkazgan (a city of Karaganda oblast of Kazakhstan), but they turned down their plans after the company’s management solved the issue of salaries increase. The wages are defined based on the results of the employees’ tests certifying their qualification. Kazakhmys is a company producing and processing natural resources. It is involved in production of copper, gold, zinc, silver, power energy. Kazakhmys Plc is listed at London Stock Exchange and Kazakhstan Stock Exchange.
