Almaty International airport named the best airport in the post soviet space, Tengrinews.kz reports, referring to the airport's press-office. The Almaty airport was awarded at the 32nd session of the Council on Aviation and Air Space Use of the Interstate Aviation Committee. The airport was awarded For achievements in development of International (categorized) airdromes. “Why handing over the award certificate Tatiana Anodina, head of Interstate Aviation Committee, said that achievements of Almaty airport were the most significant among the nominates of all six categories because the Almaty airport "introduced Category III B. It is nowhere else in CIS, not even in Russia," Anodina said. Pulkovo airport (Russia) and Borispol airport (Ukraine) were awarded as well,” International Almaty Airport press-office's press-release reads. Category III B is a precision instrument approach and landing with: a) a decision height lower than 15 m above touchdown zone elevation, or no decision height (alert height); and b) a runway visual range less than 200 meters but not less than 50 meters (ICAO and FAA) or 75 meters (JAA). An instrument landing system is a ground-based instrument approach system that provides precision guidance to an aircraft approaching and landing on a runway, using a combination of radio signals and, in many cases, high-intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe landing during instrument meteorological conditions, such as low ceilings or reduced visibility due to fog, rain, or blowing snow.
