Kazakhstani filmmaker Margulan Kapashev’s Free Birds has been chosen for the Crystal Palace International Film Festival in London, Tengrinews reports.

The filming of Kapashev’s debut short began in December 2013.

Free Birds is a philosophical parable. “Each viewer will learn something new for herself. It is very deep. Many people dream and wait for a miracle. Everyone thinks that a miracle is a good and gentle thing, but it has an opposite side to it. There are bad and dangerous miracles. Our protagonist has lived all his life waiting for a miracle and it changed his life,” Kapashev said.

The cast included Kazakhstani actors Dimash Akhimov, Adil Yesenbulatov, Aruzhan Dzhazilbekova and Tolepbergen Baisakalov. Kapashev is both the producer and the scriptwriter along with the director Nurlan Mukhatayev. Free Birds were filmed at Tengri Studio.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Corner. The filmmaker said that he had to cut the film from 23 minutes to 15 in accordance with the Cannes’ conditions. “I had to cut the film by 8 minutes. Almost half of the film had to be cut out. I was afraid that the drama would be lost, but it, in fact, turned much better and more dynamic,” Kapashev said.

Free Birds will be screened at the film festival in London on November 11.
