Tengrinews.kz – Kazakhstan’s national railway operator “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” has reminded passengers of the rules for carrying baggage on trains.
Free baggage allowance
The limits depend on the type of carriage:
- On Tulpar-Talgo trains: up to 25 kilograms and no more than 150 cm in the sum of three dimensions.
- On other trains: up to 35 kilograms and no more than 200 cm.
- In addition, passengers may carry baby strollers, bicycles without motors, or kayaks free of charge, provided they are dismantled, packed and fit in the hand luggage space. People with disabilities are entitled to free transport of technical equipment and mobility aids.
Charges for extra luggage
If belongings exceed the free allowance, they must be registered as baggage or cargo baggage at the station. Rates vary by route and are calculated per kilogram:
- Almaty – Mangystau: 57 tenge per kilogram for baggage, 114 tenge for cargo baggage.
- Almaty – Astana: 39 and 94 tenge, respectively.
- Shymkent – Almaty: 27 and 57 tenge, respectively.
Storage restrictions
Placing luggage in passenger seats, corridors, vestibules or aisles is strictly prohibited, as it may block movement and pose safety risks. Train crews are required to prevent violations, and if passengers refuse to comply, railway police may be called.
Non-compliance is punishable under Article 571 of the Administrative Code, with fines of up to five monthly calculation indices (MCI).
The company stressed that sending parcels via train attendants is illegal. Such practices not only violate regulations but may also result in disciplinary measures, including dismissal of employees.
