Tengrinews.kz – Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commented on the recent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.
According to official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aybek Smadiyarov, about 3,000 Kazakh citizens fly to Thailand daily.
“Since these are tourists, I don’t think all of them are registered with the consulate. There are only about 100-150 people on the consular register, maybe even fewer. So we cannot provide an exact number of citizens,” he stated.
Smadiyarov added that there have been no reports of Kazakh citizens being harmed.
“The clashes you’re referring to are happening far from the tourist areas, so our citizens have nothing to worry about. Our embassy is monitoring the situation, and so far, everything is calm. In this regard, there are no additional recommendations unless someone foolishly decides to venture into these jungles. Although, our citizens do travel everywhere,” Smadiyarov explained.
The escalation of hostilities in the border areas of Thailand and Cambodia began last weekend. The sides exchanged accusations of violating the ceasefire, and Thailand attacked military targets in the neighboring country.
The border conflict between the two countries began in May and escalated into intense fighting using heavy weapons, artillery, and aviation.
The conflict eventually ended with a ceasefire brokered by the United States, China, and Malaysia. In late October, the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia signed a declaration in Kuala Lumpur to resolve the conflict.
