'Deglamoring' cigarettes will decrease the number of smokers in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Director of Kazakhstan National Center for Healthy Lifestyle Zhamilya Battakova. According to Battakova, the government decree requiring frightening images to be printed on cigarette packs in Kazakhstan will come in effect in July 2013. However, some of the tobacco producers have started printing daunting images on their cigarette packs ahead of the scheduled time. The pictures warn smokers that smoking causes deadly diseases, provokes impotence, causes drug addiction and harms health of babies of smoking mothers. Battakova noted cigarette packs, especially the ones targeted on women, used to have bright and cheerful designs that made them more attractive. Now, with the frightening images printed on them, the cigarette packs will become less attractive for buyers and will scare them away. “A kind of 'deglamoring' of cigarettes is happening, which, I think, will reduce the demand,” Battakova said. Besides, participants of the press-conference timed to the World No Tobacco Day once again stressed that raising cigarette prices could help decrease the number of smokers in Kazakhstan. Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that tobacco excise will double starting from January 1, 2014. According to the research, North-Kazakhstan oblast leads by the number of smokers in Kazakhstan. It is followed by Karaganda oblast, Almaty city and Almaty oblast. The number of smoking women is increasing as well as that of men. By Assemgul Kassenova
