Tengrinews.kz - US President Donald Trump has announced possible new sanctions against Russia if Moscow does not begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, according to Voice of America.

As the publication writes, he expressed this opinion during a press conference at the White House.

"That's probably it," Trump said when asked whether he would impose additional sanctions if the Russian leadership did not negotiate.

At the same time, the American leader emphasized that "the war would never have happened" if he had been president at the time.

Trump did not directly answer the question of whether the United States would continue to send weapons to Ukraine. He only said: "We'll see."

"We're talking to (Ukrainian President Volodymyr. - ed.) Zelenskyy. We’re going to be talking with President Putin very soon. We're going to look at it," Trump said.

According to him, he does not yet know where and when he will meet with the Ukrainian leader.

“President Zelenskyy would like to have peace. He’s told me that very strongly. But it takes two to tango. Millions of people are being killed. It’s a vicious situation,” he told reporters.

He also noted that the European Union should finance Ukraine "much more than they are paying now."

Trump added that during a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he touched on the topic of Ukraine and told his interlocutor that "he should step in and help resolve the situation."

"He's not done very much on that. He's got a lot of power, like we have a lot of power. I said, 'You ought to get it settled.' We did discuss it." the president explained.

Donald Trump officially took office as the President of the United States on January 20, taking the oath of office at the inauguration ceremony. For the first time in 40 years, it took place not on the steps of the Capitol, but inside the building.
