Tengrinews.kz - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has promised significant benefits for the people of Greenland if the island becomes part of the United States.
Trump confirmed that his son, Donald Trump Jr., along with several U.S. representatives, will visit Greenland.
"I am hearing that the people of Greenland are "MAGA." My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights. Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
In December last year, Trump declared that it was an "absolute necessity" for the U.S. to own Greenland "for purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World." In response, Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede firmly stated that Greenland is "not for sale and will never be for sale." However, Egede expressed interest in achieving full independence from Denmark.
Later in December, the New York Post reported that Trump was "100% serious" about acquiring Greenland. According to The Washington Post, Trump's ambitions regarding Greenland and the Panama Canal are part of an "overarching mission" to counter Russia and China.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, covers 2.166 million square kilometers, nearly 80 percent of which is covered by ice. It is situated in the northeast of North America and has a population of just over 50,000, mostly Inuit (Eskimos).
Until 1953, Greenland was a colony of Denmark. It remains part of the Danish kingdom but gained autonomy in 2009, allowing for self-governance and control over its internal affairs.
Previously, Donald Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social about the need to include Greenland in the U.S. Later, Denmark announced that it would spend billions on defense in the Arctic after Trump's announcement to seize Greenland.
