Tengrinews.kz - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is pressuring Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to appoint his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, to the position of outgoing Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who represents the state, according to the New York Post.
The newspaper cites information from sources familiar with the situation.
"Trump really wants Lara to do it," one of the informed sources said.
According to the source, the chances of appointing the wife of Trump’s second son, Eric, are quite high.
It is reported that the President-elect has discussed this matter with the Florida governor.
Lara Trump, 42, has expressed her desire to become the next senator from Florida, the publication noted. This week, she stepped down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee and stated that she is 100% ready to consider taking Rubio’s seat if he is confirmed as Secretary of State in the Trump administration.
"It is something I would seriously consider. If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me," she said in an interview.
DeSantis' press secretary, in a comment to the newspaper, referred to a statement from the governor mentioning "strong interest from several potential candidates" for the Senate seat, not denying that Lara Trump could be considered for the position.
However, a source close to the Republican National Committee told the publication that Trump is "trying to force the appointment with her stepping down."
"There are a lot of smoke-filled backroom discussions to the point where publicly Trumpworld is trying to force DeSantis’ hand," the source said.
As for Rubio, his nomination is likely to be easily confirmed for a position in the Trump administration, due to his strong bipartisan ties established during his time as vice-chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
It is worth noting that earlier, Trump proposed Senator Marco Rubio as a candidate for secretary of state. Rubio, who was one of the main candidates for vice president in this year's presidential race, was first elected to the Senate in 2010. He has established himself as a proponent of a tough foreign policy approach toward China, Iran, and Venezuela—countries that Trump frequently criticized during his campaign.
