Tengrinews.kz – Former U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may hold a face-to-face meeting ahead of or during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, South China Morning Post reports, citing sources.
The 2025 APEC summit, set to take place in South Korea from October 30 to November 1, is being described as the “best opportunity” for the two leaders to meet in person, according to the outlet.
"Trump may visit China before heading to the summit or meet Xi on the sidelines of the APEC gathering," the article states.
Tensions between Washington and Beijing escalated earlier this year, when the U.S. raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 104 percent. In response, China imposed tariffs on American agricultural imports. By March, the U.S. had reduced its tariffs to 20 percent.
On May 10–11, the two countries held high-level trade and economic talks in Geneva, after which Trump declared a "complete reset" in U.S.-China relations.
In June, both sides agreed to mutual tariff reductions: the U.S. would lower duties on Chinese goods to 55 percent, while China agreed to cut tariffs on American products to 10 percent.
More recently, Beijing criticized Trump’s proposed plan to impose 100-percent tariffs on nations partnering with Russia if the war in Ukraine isn’t halted within 50 days.
