Tengrinews.kz - Watertight safes with confidential intelligence data are reportedly on the sunken superyacht of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch off the coast of Sicily, according to CNN.
Divers investigating the wreckage of the $40 million superyacht have requested enhanced security measures to guard the vessel.
"A formal request has been accepted and implemented for additional security of the wreckage until it can be raised," confirmed a representative of the Sicilian civil protection authority.
Italian prosecutors investigating the case believe that the 56-meter (184-foot) yacht Bayesian may contain data related to several Western intelligence services. This was reported to the outlet by four sources familiar with the investigation and the salvage operation.
It is believed that the sunken vessel, lying on the seabed at a depth of about 50 meters (164 feet), contains waterproof safes with two super-encrypted hard drives containing information, including access codes and other confidential data, the publication reports.
Mike Lynch had ties to British, American, and other intelligence agencies through his various companies, including the cybersecurity firm Darktrace, which he founded.
Initially, local law enforcement feared that potential thieves might attempt to reach the wreckage to find expensive jewelry and other valuable items still aboard the yacht. Now, they are concerned that the wreckage may attract interest from foreign governments, including Russia and China. Authorities have called for the yacht to be closely guarded, both above water and with underwater surveillance.
It should be noted that Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, American attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, British banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, as well as the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, died when the vessel sank during a severe storm.
