According to RTS, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced the proposal, stating that Trump enjoys significant trust among Serbians, while Putin remains highly popular in the country. Vucic shared this during an interview with TV Pink.
"We will discuss this with people from Trump’s administration. I have never interfered in global matters, but Serbia is interested in becoming the venue for a meeting between the Russian and U.S. presidents," Vucic said.
He added that Serbia is "fully prepared to guarantee the safety" of both leaders.
Earlier, Swiss authorities also expressed willingness to host the meeting, saying they would do so if asked.
Meanwhile, Russian President's press secretary Dmitry Peskov noted that no specific plans for a meeting between Putin and Trump have been made yet, adding that there has been no initiative from the American side so far. He suggested it would be more appropriate to wait until Trump officially assumes office.
During a dinner with Republican governors, Trump responded to a question about a possible meeting by stating that Putin had expressed a desire to meet him.
On Sunday, Trump's National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said that preparations for a meeting between Trump and Putin are underway.
Last week, media outlets reported that Trump's team is reconsidering its approach to ending the war in Ukraine. Unnamed European officials, who have been in discussions with Trump’s representatives, noted that the president-elect’s aides have yet to finalize a strategy for resolving the conflict.
