Tengrinews.kz – The number of cases of childhood hypertension is increasing worldwide. This is stated in a study published on the Lancet portal, citing RIA Novosti.

“Childhood hypertension affects a substantial and growing proportion of the global paediatric population,” the authoritative medical journal writes.

Scientists link this trend to a worsening lifestyle and rising rates of obesity. After analyzing data from articles covering a total of 443,914 children, the authors found that between 2000 and 2020, the prevalence of childhood hypertension nearly doubled:

  • from 3.4% to 6.53% among boys;
  • from 3.02% to 5.82% among girls.

Commenting on the study, Ignacio Fernandez Lozano, president of the Spanish Society of Cardiology, said the results only confirm what specialists have long observed in practice.

“This is alarming, because we see that the cardiovascular health of children and adolescents is steadily worsening. Hypertension is an adult disease, and its appearance at such a young age is concerning,” the doctor said.

According to WHO data from the end of 2020, 1.13 billion people worldwide have hypertension, with about 40% unaware of their condition and only 10% receiving treatment.
