Maggie Smith was 89 years old.
According to the publication, the news was confirmed by her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, in their statement. They reported that she passed away peacefully in hospital early on Friday morning, September 27.

"An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother," the statement reads.
The family expressed their gratitude for the support and asked that people respect "their right to privacy."
Maggie Smith was born on December 28, 1934. Her filmography includes around 80 films. Maggie Smith was an outstanding actress, known for her roles in several popular projects, one of which was Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films.
She won two Oscars: the best actress in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1970) and another for best supporting actress in California Suite (1979).
