Kazakhstan ranks 26th in global food poisoning risk for travelers

Tengrinews.kz - A recent study by Healthnews has identified the top 10 countries with a high risk of food poisoning for travelers, revealing that Kazakhstan ranks 26th with a search frequency of 29 queries per 100,000 users.

Tengrinews.kz - A recent study by Healthnews has identified the top 10 countries with a high risk of food poisoning for travelers, revealing that Kazakhstan ranks 26th with a search frequency of 29 queries per 100,000 users.

The study analyzed data from 36 countries featured in The New York Times' 2024 travel guide. It assessed the risk of food poisoning based on Google search queries related to symptoms and treatments in 2023.

Top countries for food poisoning risk:

  • India - 114 queries: Foodborne illnesses are common due to pathogens like E. coli and Salmonella.
  • Kenya - 102 queries: Major pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus and aflatoxin.
  • Sri Lanka - 96 queries: Common illnesses stem from E. coli and Salmonella.
  • Indonesia - 84 queries: Known for "Bali Belly," caused by various pathogens.
  • Mexico - 82 queries: Infections from microorganisms such as E. coli and Cyclospora.
  • Egypt - 78 queries: Issues with organophosphates and Salmonella.
  • Singapore - 74 queries: Pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella.
  • Morocco - 72 queries: Risks from dairy and fish products contaminated with E. coli.
  • Caribbean Islands - 69 queries: High economic impact from gastroenteritis.
  • El Salvador - 64 queries: Foodborne illnesses linked to norovirus and Salmonella.

Countries with the lowest food poisoning risks include Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Iceland, with query frequencies between 3 and 11, attributed to high hygiene standards and food safety regulations.

To reduce the risk of food poisoning, travelers are advised to follow basic hygiene practices, such as washing hands before meals, avoiding raw or undercooked food, and drinking only bottled water.
