Tengrinews.kz - El Al suspends flights to Moscow after reports that Russian air defense systems shot down an Azerbaijani plane, according to The Jerusalem Post.
The airline El Al announced on Thursday that it is suspending flights on the Tel Aviv-Moscow route for the upcoming week "due to events in Russian airspace."
Aviation representatives link this decision to the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane on December 25 near Aktau. It is increasingly believed that "the crash was caused by the Russian air defense system, which was attempting to shoot down Ukrainian drones."
On December 25, a passenger plane of Azerbaijan Airlines crashed in Kazakhstan. The flight was en route from Baku to Grozny. There were 67 people on board, of which 38 were killed, including crew members.
Earlier, we reported that the aircraft experienced a failure of its control systems, including the elevator and ailerons. This was announced by Kazakhstan's Minister of Transport, Marat Karabayev, during a briefing in the Mangystau region.
According to Euronews, citing sources in the Azerbaijani government, the cause of the tragedy was a surface-to-air missile that hit the plane. The missile, exploding near the aircraft, presumably caused fatal injuries to the passengers and crew.
The official cause of the crash has not been announced yet.
According to Kazakhstan's criminal procedural code, law enforcement agencies from Russia and Azerbaijan will not be allowed to participate in the forensic investigation, but they will be involved in the investigation of the aviation incident.
