Tengrinews.kz – A major failure in Amazon Web Services (AWS) disrupted the operation of numerous popular online platforms around the world, The Verge reports.
The outage began at 3:11 a.m. Eastern Time (1:11 p.m. Astana time) and affected the US-EAST-1 region — one of AWS’s key data centers located in Virginia. However, users in other regions also reported disruptions.
Amazon confirmed it was “investigating increased error rates and latency across multiple services” and said engineers were working to resolve the issue.
According to Sky News, more than 2,000 outage reports were recorded in the United States alone. Data from Downdetector shows the disruption impacted dozens of popular services — including Amazon Alexa, Prime Video, and Amazon Music, as well as third-party platforms such as Canva, Zoom, Roblox, Fortnite, Snapchat, Slack, Duolingo, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Network, Signal, Tidal, Wordle, Perplexity AI, and IMDB.
Several banks and government services were also affected, including Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds Bank, and the UK tax agency HMRC.
Telecom and cloud solution providers like BT, EE, Sky Mobile, Vodafone, Atlassian, Asana, Smartsheet, and Square experienced issues as well. Users also reported login problems with Coinbase, Eventbrite, Peloton, Life360, Ring, Rocket League, Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Hay Day, and Dead by Daylight.
Similar large-scale AWS outages have occurred before — in 2020, 2021, and 2023 — when disruptions in the same region caused global service blackouts lasting several hours.
