Tengrinews.kz - French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should not forget that his country was established as a result of a UN resolution, referring to the November 1947 UN General Assembly resolution on the partition plan for Palestine into Jewish and Arab states. This was reported by the French publication Le Parisien, citing RFI.

"Mr. Netanyahu must not forget that his country was created by a decision of the UN. Therefore this is not the time to disregard the decisions of the UN," Macron said this at a closed meeting of the Council of Ministers that took place on October 15. It is noted that Macron's statement "was not intended for publication."

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot "softened" the French president's statement regarding the creation of the State of Israel.

"The president's statement at the Council of Ministers was made within a general framework, reminding of the importance of adhering to the UN Charter for both Israel and everyone else," Barrot said.

The Israeli Prime Minister responded to Macron's statement almost immediately. Netanyahu emphasized that Israel was established thanks to the victory in the War of Independence.

"A reminder to the president of France: It was not the UN resolution that established the State of Israel, but rather the victory achieved in the War of Independence with the blood of heroic fighters, many of whom were Holocaust survivors — including from the Vichy regime in France," Netanyahu's statement is quoted by The Times of Israel.

As noted by Le Monde, tensions between Macron and Netanyahu increased after the French president advocated last week for stopping the export of weapons used by Israel in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. In his view, this is the only way to end the fighting. The two leaders had a phone conversation during which Netanyahu told Macron that he opposes a "unilateral ceasefire that will not change the security situation in Lebanon."
