Tengrinews.kz - Indonesia has officially joined BRICS as a full member, according to the government of Brazil, which assumed the chairmanship of the bloc on January 1, according to DW.

The BRICS member countries unanimously approved Indonesia’s membership as part of the group’s expansion, initially agreed upon during the 2023 Johannesburg summit.

Although the membership was confirmed in 2023, Jakarta postponed the finalization of its accession until after the presidential elections held in October 2024.

"Indonesia shares with other members a commitment to reforming global governance institutions and contributes positively to deepening South-South cooperation," stated the Brazilian government.

BRICS is an informal association initially comprising Russia, Brazil, India, and China. South Africa joined the group in 2010.

In September 2024, NATO member Turkey submitted a bid to join BRICS. Vietnam has also expressed interest in joining the bloc.

Recently, BRICS expanded its membership by including Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Iran.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that several countries, including Indonesia, would join BRICS as partner states starting in 2025. Other partners will include Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
