Tengrinews.kz - Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, addressed recent comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS countries if they proceed with plans to create a currency alternative to the U.S. dollar, according to China Daily.
Lin emphasized that BRICS nations advocate openness, inclusivity, and mutually beneficial cooperation rather than confrontation or hostility towards third parties.
"China is committed to strengthening cooperation within BRICS and will continue working with its partners to deepen collaboration across various sectors, contributing to the sustainable and stable growth of the global economy," Lin stated.
Trump had made the threats via his social media platform, Truth Social, vowing steep tariffs should BRICS nations move forward with their plans for an alternative currency.
BRICS, an intergovernmental alliance, was established in 2006 by Russia, China, India, and Brazil, with South Africa joining in 2011. As of early 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia have also become members.
Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping identified four "red lines" in relations with the United States during talks with U.S. President Joe Biden.
