Tengrinews.kz – After hours of negotiations between government officials and the opposition in Abkhazia, which began on Monday, Aslan Bzhania, the president of the republic, signed a resignation letter, according to D News Abkhazia.

The information about the resignation was confirmed by the press service of the head of state.

"In order to maintain stability and constitutional order in the country, in accordance with Article 65 of the Constitution of the Republic of Abkhazia, I resign from the post of president of the Republic of Abkhazia," Bzhania said in a statement.

According to the signed document, the protesters who gathered on the territory and inside the government building complex must disperse on November 19. If this point is not fulfilled, President Bzhania will withdraw his resignation letter.

Vice President of the republic Badra Gunba has become acting president of Abkhazia.

Prime Minister of Abkhazia Alexander Ankvab has also been dismissed from his post. At the same time, Valeri Bganba has been appointed to this post. The current ministers will serve until the newly elected president of the Republic of Abkhazia takes office, as stated in the agreement between the government and the opposition.

The active phase of the confrontation between the opposition and the government in Abkhazia began on November 15. On that day, protesters gathered outside the parliament and demanded that the bill on ratification of the investment agreement with Russia be rejected (opposition supporters believe that its implementation will lead to higher housing prices, as well as risks for small and medium-sized businesses in the republic - ed.). Then people stormed the building, broke the bars on the windows, and also knocked down the door and went inside. After that, they erected barricades and prepared for defense.

Having occupied the government building complex in Sukhum, the opposition refused to leave it until the country's president Aslan Bzhania resigned. The protesters also demanded that early presidential elections be held. Bzhania himself refused to leave his post until the very end.
