Tengrinews.kz - The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, bypassing former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was widely discussed as a potential recipient.
The Nobel Committee in Oslo recognized Machado for her tireless efforts to advance democratic rights in Venezuela. It highlighted her role as a unifying figure within the fragmented opposition and her steadfast commitment to democracy despite threats, pressure, and the need to operate under challenging circumstances. Machado has spent over two decades advocating for fair elections and an independent judiciary in Venezuela. In 2024, she ran as an opposition candidate in the presidential elections, but authorities barred her from participating.
Trump’s potential candidacy had sparked political commentary and comparisons. Since returning to the White House in January 2025, he repeatedly claimed that he “deserved” the prize and suggested that not receiving it would be an “insult to the United States”.
Speaking at the Quantico military base in September, Trump said: “Will I get the Nobel Peace Prize? Absolutely not. They will give it to some guythat didn’t do a damn thing.”
