Tengrinews.kz - U.S. President Joe Biden has declared January 9, 2025, a National Day of Mourning in the United States.

The day of mourning in the United States was declared in connection with the death of the 39th President of the country, Jimmy Carter. This is stated in Biden's decree published by the White House.

"I do further appoint January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States. I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance," Joe Biden wrote.

He also directed that the U.S. flag be flown at half-staff at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, all military posts and naval stations, and all federal naval vessels in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its territories and possessions for 30 days after Carter's death.

"I also direct that, for the same length of time, the representatives of the United States in foreign countries shall make similar arrangements for the display of the flag at half-staff over their embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations," the order said.

Biden noted that Jimmy Carter was a man of character, courage, and compassion whose life of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in history.

"He embodied the very best of America: A humble servant of God and the people. A heroic champion of global peace and human rights, and an honorable leader whose moral clarity and hopeful vision lifted our Nation and changed our world," Biden wrote.

The son of the 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter informed the media of his death. Jimmy Carter was 100 years old. Thus, he became the longest-lived president in the history of the United States.
