Officials and top-management of the Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund have been irresponsible, failing to tackle labor conflicts in the oil-producing Mangistau region, President Nazarbayev stated when speaking at a Government sitting in the Astana-based Akorda Presidential Palace December 26, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing the President’s official website. “The major problem is that the government officials and top-management of Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund who were supposed to settle the labor disputes have been irresponsible and provided misleading information instead. We need to take a lesson out of the situation”, President Nazarbayev said. President demanded that the Prosecutor General secure a transparent and honest investigation to hold the instigators of the public unrest duly liable. According to the President, what happened in Mangistau was a serious trial for the whole people of Kazakhstan. The oil-producing city Zhanaozen in Mangistau oblast faced a wave of public unrest December 16. The death toll stood at 16. One person died in the clashes in Shetpe village December 17. The investigation is under way. Curfew has been announced in Zhanaozen. December 26 Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund was headed by Umirzak Shukeev. Timur Kulibayev had submitted his resignation letter following the unrest.
