Traces of drugs have been found in the blood of the former Kazakh ambassador to Austria Rakhat Aliyev, who committed suicide in an Austrian prison last week, Tengrinews reports citing RIA Novosti.

The information was confirmed by the Austrian Prosecutor’s Office. A pre-test has detected traces of barbiturates in the sample of Aliyev’s blood.

It is also noted that the data is considered preliminary and the final results will be available after a toxicological examination, which will be ready in a few days. According to the newswire, barbiturates are forbidden in Austria, and this virtually excludes the possibility that the barbiturates could have been prescribed to Rakhat Aliyev by the prison doctor.

Austrian The Local reports that Aliyev’s diary was found in his cell. According to a representative of the Prosecutor's Office, the diary is now being translated from Russian into German in order to understand the causes that pushed the former ambassador of Kazakhstan to suicide. It is believed that Aliyev kept the diary to record threats he received from inmates.

Rakhat Aliyev died in Vienna’s Josefstadt prison. He was found hanged in his cell on the night of 23 February. Later, the Ministry of Justice of Austria officially confirmed the suicide of the former ambassador of Kazakhstan. Shortly before the incident, Aliyev was moved from a three-person cell to a solitary confinement citing threats from his cellmates. The autopsy of Rakhat Aliyev’s body confirmed the death was a suicide.
