Kazakhstan General Prosecutor's Office statement after Ablyazov's arrest
Kazakhstan General Prosecutor's Office speaker Nurdaulet Suindikov made a statement after Ablyazov was arrested in France.
"On August 2 Kazakhstan General Prosecutor's Office has filed a request with the French authorities asking for extradite Ablyazov to Kazakhstan," Suindikov said.
The General Prosecutor's Office of Kazakhstan plans to pursue his extradition and believes that Kazakhstan has full right to request it from France since Ablyazov is a Kazakhstan national and the gravest of his crimes were committed in Kazakhstan.
Ablyazov is wanted in Kazakhstan for embezzlement, fraud, money laundering and siphoning off $6 billion of BTA bank's funds through dummy companies and illegal financial schemes.
Mukhtar Ablyazov was arrested on July 31 not far from Cannes at the extradition request of Ukraine.
After the arrest the Aix-en-Provence court decided to leave Mukhtar Ablyazov in custody until the decision on his extradition is made fearing that he would flee if released. Then the court denied him release on bail on August 22. So Ablyazov has been in custody at the Aix-Luynes jail in southern France since July.
