“I wouldn’t risk buying watermelons now”: doctor warns Kazakhstanis
Tengrinews.kz — Public health officials have urged Kazakhstanis not to rush into buying early watermelons and melons.
What to pay attention to when choosing a watermelon
Epidemiologist and Deputy Head of the National Center for Public Health Manar Smagul reminded that watermelons in Kazakhstan usually ripen from mid-July to September. Therefore, the appearance of “local watermelons” on store shelves before the start of the season should alert buyers.
According to the specialist, fertilizers may be used to accelerate the growth and ripening of such fruits. She explained that this is why early melons and watermelons are considered potentially dangerous, as nitrates are often used in their cultivation.
“If you eat watermelons with a high nitrate content, chemical reactions occur in the body: nitrates bind to iron, resulting in the formation of methemoglobin. The ability of hemoglobin to carry oxygen to organs and tissues is disrupted, which can lead to poisoning. That is why it is very important to pay attention to seasonality. Right now, for example, I would not risk buying watermelons,” she said.
It is impossible to determine nitrate content by appearance — special laboratory tests are needed for this, Manar Smagul noted.
However, some external signs may indirectly indicate a possible elevated nitrate content. According to the epidemiologist, yellow streaks in the flesh and an excessively bright red color should raise concern. Before buying, it is also important to carefully inspect the watermelon and make sure there are no cracks on it.
“Melons and watermelons should only be bought at authorized points of sale — markets or stores where you are sure the products have undergone laboratory testing,” Smagul added.
Expert recommendations
Amid the seasonal rise in illness, Manar Smagul reminded that intestinal infections most often occur due to failure to follow basic hygiene rules.
According to the epidemiologist, one common mistake is storing perishable foods at room temperature. If a glass of milk is left on the table for a long time, it creates a favorable environment for microorganisms to multiply.
The specialist also reminded that all vegetables, fruits and other products that are not heat-treated must be thoroughly washed before consumption.
In addition, she recommended swimming only in specially equipped areas and not swallowing water. During trips, especially to regions or countries with high rates of intestinal infections, the doctor advises drinking only bottled water.
Manar Smagul separately emphasized that young children are especially vulnerable to intestinal infections. According to her, without timely medical care, the illness can quickly lead to dehydration.
“Loss of water causes a child to feel lethargic. Vital processes are disrupted, and this can lead to complications,” the expert noted.
