A very unusual phenomenon has been witnessed by residents of Kyzylorda on the evening of July 8.

At about 10 p.m. local time, a bright white glow appeared in the sky over the city, making the residents look up and wonder at the origin of the phenomenon. The white plume was moving across the sky from east to west for about 15-20 minutes.

One of the witnesses sent photos and a video capturing the glow to Tengrinews.

Another YouTube video called “Rocket falling in Kyzylorda” shows the same phenomenon.

According to eyewitnesses, indeed, it all looked as if a real rocket was falling somewhere close to the city. Or - maybe some other flying object…

We are sorry to disappoint you and discard the more interesting and exciting theories, but all the evidence suggest that a human-made rocket was involved.

It appears that the residents of Kyzylorda saw one of the detached stages of Soyuz-2.1b rocket launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome on the same day. At what time? At 9:58 p.m. Astana time.

As was reported by Roscosmos [Russia’s Federal Space Agency], according to their calculations, the detachable parts of the rocket were supposed to fall on Russian territory (in Perm Krai and Sverdlovsk Oblast) and on Kazakhstan land (in Aktobe and Kostanai Oblasts).

The latest information suggests that the launch of Soyuz-2.1b was successful. The rocket brought all seven satellites safely into the orbit. These are the larger Russian spacecraft Meteor-M №2 and six small satellites: Russia’s ICA-PN2 (Relek) and DX-1, Britain’s Ukube-1 and TechDemoSat-1, Norway’s AISSAT-2 and America’s SkySat-2.

These satellites will perform everything from weather forecasting to monitoring the ozone layer, from watching the Earth atmosphere to monitoring the sea surface and various atmospheric transient phenomena, from marine vessels management to developing and testing new technologies.
