Kazakhstani weightlifter Zhazira Zhapparkul has won a silver medal in the women’s -69 kg weight category at the World Weightlifting Championship in Almaty, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Kazakhstani weightlifter Zhazira Zhapparkul has won a silver medal in the women’s -69 kg weight category at the World Weightlifting Championship in Almaty, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Previously the 20 y.o. athlete won a bronze medal in the snatch. This time around, Zhapparkulova won silver by lifting a 144 kg barbell in the clean and jerk. Un Hui Ryo from North Korea won the gold in the clean and jerk with 145 kg. Bulgarian weightlifter Dzina Sazanavets followed Zhapparkulova with 143 kg and the bronze medal.
“I was preparing for the World Championship for four month. The training was successful. I am very happy to be the first (ethnic) Kazakh girl to win a medal at the World Championship. I dedicate this medal to my parents, because it is thanks to my parents that I was born. I am so grateful to them. I have a little sister Alfiya. Tomorrow is her birthday and I want to dedicate this medal to her as well. I also dedicate my victory to my trainer Vyatcheslav Nyu, my first trainer Dyusenbek Kurmanov, and Arys region where I was born and stepped into the gym for the first time. I started weightlifting right then and it has been my favorite sport ever since. It is my life!” Zhapparkul said emotionally after her victory.
The young weighlifter wants to continue representing Kazakhstan on the international arena.
Kazakhstan's national team finished third at the World Weightlifting Championship that was held in Almaty on November 8-16. Kazakh athletes won five medals: three gold and two silver. Olympic champion of the 2012 London Games Zulfiya Chinshanlo hauled a gold medal in 53 kilo weight league. Young Kazakh weightlifter Zhazira Zhapparkul won a silver medal in 69 kilo weight league. As for men, in 94 kilo weight category, Zhassulan Kydyrbayev clinched gold and Vladimir Sedov - silver.
