The first bike ride of the season will kick off on April 30 in Almaty. Traditionally the ride is opened by Almaty Akim (Mayor) Akhmetzhan Yessimov who leads Kazakh sportsmen and everyone who wishes to take part in the ride around the city, Almaty Administration reports. As per the press-release, the event is timed to the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan Independence and People's Unity Day. The ride will start at 8.30 a.m. at the crossing of Al-Farabi and Tattimbet streets and finish at the square in front of the First Presiden't Park (at the crossing of Al-Farabi and Navoi streets). In February 2011 Yessimov supported the idea of a bike-boom in Almaty and instructed his deputies to prepare a project to produce cost-effective bikes.
