Kazakhstani Olympic champion, IBF cruiserweight champion and Val Barker Trophy holder Vassily Jirov talked with Vesti.kz about the reasons why Kazakhstani boxers Gennady Golovkin and Kanat Islam could not get big fights.
“When you come to the USA you get a chance that you must not miss. American fighters tend to choose weak opponents to create a title for themselves. I was just lucky. An American chose a fight with me by chance and totally messed up. An unknown boxer from Kazakhstan KOed a promising boxer with four victories straight. Golovkin and Islam, along with other our fighter are not as lucky, because opponents have seen them in the ring. They know the power of their punches and avoid facing them,” Jirov said.
Many critics claim that Golovkin and Islam cannot afford a big fight financially. Jirov does not agree with these statements.
“I believe that thinking of what money could do is not the right approach. It hinders a person from moving forward. Everyone has his own path. Nothing happens by accident. There is a logical explanation to everything that happens in our world. If one strives for greatness, he can get his shot despite the circumstances,” Jirov said.
Meanwhile, Golovkin is seriously keeping himself busy waiting for the big shot. This year, the undefeated Tripe G plans to have 4 fights. His next one is scheduled against Willie Monroe Jr on May 16 in California. In turn, Kanat Islam had a fight on March 23.
