Tengrinews.kz – The historic match between Kairat and Real Madrid in Almaty has concluded with a heavy 5-0 defeat for the Kazakh club. However, the team still has six more matches in the Champions League group stage and a chance to earn valuable points.
Despite putting up a brave fight against one of the world’s best teams, Kairat could not avoid another heavy defeat, following their 1-4 loss to Sporting Lisbon two weeks earlier.
Kairat’s position in the standings
After two losses with a 1:9 aggregate score, Kairat now sits at the bottom of the group in 36th place. They share the position with Ajax (Netherlands), who have a goal difference of minus 6, and Benfica (Portugal) with minus 2.
Other teams still without points in this Champions League season include Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, Newcastle (England), Monaco, PSV Eindhoven, and Napoli.
Can Kairat still earn points?
After facing teams from the "other universe", Kairat’s next games offer a realistic chance to compete for points.
"As much as it may sound like an underestimation, no one will mind calling Cyprus’ Pafos a more beatable opponent than Real or Arsenal. In the Champions League, every team deserves respect, but this is one match where Kairat’s chances for success are definitely higher," said Vesti.kz.
Pafos, currently with a draw against Olympiacos (Greece) and a heavy 1-5 loss to Bayern Munich, will face Kairat on October 21 in Almaty.

Historic victory ahead
Should Kairat manage to win against Pafos, it would mark a historic first victory for any Kazakh club in the Champions League group stage.
Kairat is only the second club from Kazakhstan to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, following Astana's debut in the 2015/2016 season. Back then, Astana finished at the bottom of their group with four points, drawing all their matches and losing twice.
For Kairat, any victory in this stage will be a historic achievement.
Optimism for upcoming matches
In addition to the Pafos match, Kairat’s chances are also buoyed by the return of key players from injury, including goalkeepers Alexander Zarutsky and Temirlan Anarbekov, and midfielder Dan Glazer. This could give the team more options, especially with a packed domestic schedule.
After facing Real Madrid, the team should feel more confident – after all, Kairat managed to hold their ground in the first half against the most successful club in European football history.
