The trainer of WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio Robert Garcia talked about their strategy for the upcoming fight against WBA (Super) and IBO middleweight champion from Kazakhstan Gennady Golovkin, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.

Continuation

Garcia noted that many of Golovkin’s opponents feared the Kazakh boxer, but the team of the Mexicican boxer would not allow that to happen with Rubio. The trainer admitted that Rubio would miss some punches from Golovkin. “Rubio has to be prepared to take some hard punches, but he also has to pressure him, back him up, take him into the later rounds. And then who knows what happens when Triple G starts getting hitting too. Those shorts punches, those uppercuts, what if Triple G starts swelling up. He has never been cut. You never know what kind of response he is going to give once he gets hit by a true 160-pounder who also hits hard,” Garcia said.

Many believe that Golovkin is hittable, but the unbeaten boxer has not lost a single fight in his professional career. Garcia hopes that his boxer will make it to the later rounds and get Golovkin there. However, the stats seem to be less reassuring than Garcia would hope. Golovkin has a 90% KO ratio, which is considered the highest KO ratio among the current world champions and the best one in the history of the middleweight boxing.

“That is our plan, we have to be protective, have good defense, but we are going to have to take some punches. And if my fighter is able to do that, I like our chances in the later rounds,” Garcia stated.

The Golovkin-Rubio fight is scheduled to October 18. The boxers will face each other in the unification fight at StubHub Center in Los Angeles.
