Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan has been called “the new Mike Tyson” in the media. He proved to be worthy of the nickname after defeating Martin Murray the past Saturday in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Triple G, in the manner of the famous heavyweight, scored his 19th consecutive KO.
The “Iron Mike” era ended in May 1986 when Tyson faced a contender for the championship title James Tillis. During the fight Tillis, despite going down in a knock down, continued to fight for 10 rounds. Tyson won by the unanimous decision of the judges.
The knockout in a fight against Murray, too, has become Golovkin’s 19th KO. The next “Iron Mike” or not, but Golovkin definitely scored unheard for a middleweight KO ratio back in 2014 and continues to sustain the 90% mark.

The Golovkin-Murray fight was stopped by the referee Luis Pabon in the 11th round after Murray’s three knockdowns. As for Murray, he stood against Golovkin longer in the ring than any of his opponents.
